Kayak Camping Gear List 2021 - Everything You Need
Hey Gatewood, can you share your put in and take out locations? Even a rough idea of each would help! Trying to run this river. :) Thanks a ton!
What water boots are you wearing?
Hubby and I looking at getting kayaks. Wish us luck!! Looking at sportsman 106 and 120 for him.
What kind of kayak do you have?
I use the Crescent Ck1!
@@GatewoodBrown we just bought 2 old town sportsman’s 120. We’ve been watching your videos. So helpful!!!
@@kelliparker4037 The Sportsman 120 is great and I used it for years! We still use it on trips to bring more people along
Devils River! I live about 30min from it on a ranch! Definitely a fave spot! 😊
Utterly beautiful! But why the utterly uncapable sit-on-tops ?
Amazing canyon. I was on a rafting trip in the early 1990s and the water was level was much higher
Very cool! Yes this was at low water but I’d imagine it hasn’t changed too much since then
Devils River in West Texas
Yes that’s the one!
I’m so happy I got it before it sold out. It’s such a great backpack. I was on the RD website looking for instructions on how to care/ maintain my backpack and I couldn’t find it anywhere so I came here. I had no idea at the time it be no longer available once sold out. I’m so happy with my purchase. Please share how to care for it. Thank you 😊
I’m happy you did too! That design is retired for good. Really enjoyed its run but on to new things to experiment with and enjoy!
WOW! That was beautiful! Awesome... thanks
Very surprising for sure!
Looks like the Comal River....
Close! A little further west is the devils river
@GatewoodBrown Yep. I'm a SCUBA diver and got my 1st face mask and Devil's River was my first time when I was 8. Loved it BUT.... there are places in the Nueces River than are 40 and 50 ft. deep and the water is crystal clear just like Devil's River. Comal crystal clear but not very deep.
@@rustysawyers5109 yep the comal is fun to have goggles. Lots of aquatic life there. I had no clue the nueces got that deep. I kind of assumed it was 15’ max. Those depths you talk about are caves!
The Gasconade, Big and Little Piney, Elk and Buffalo Rivers, Current, White and Jacks Fork all incredible floating and fishing but don't tell anyone. Its our secret. Nice float.
Thanks! I’ve mapped all those out and have been salivating at checking each one off, slowly but surely. Mulberry too!
Beautiful.
Thanks John!
Great video boys. Keep up the good work. Just had my first Llano river trip. What a special place.
Thank you! Which part did you do? They’re all wonderful but always keen to hear where people prefer
@@GatewoodBrown Bones Crossing to just about where yall landed. Was a trip to scout the river so we could bring some Trail Life Trailmen out next week. Your bags look awesome. Keep up the good work on that.
@@DerrickPerrin nice that’s a great stretch to do. I Designed those bags specially for kayak camping in Texas and the surrounding states so I appreciate the kind words!
My factory specializes in making this kind of bag
Thank you. I’m currently happy with my manufacturer
@@GatewoodBrown You're welcome, contact me if you need anything
Living for vicariously through you guys❤❤
We are glad to have you along for the ride!
They are not glacially fed streams
Yes they are. The first creek we paddled is literally down stream from a glacier.
Beautiful area that I've hiked and camped but never ran. The Cossatot to the west is even more brutal. One note, that HWY 84 bridge was where volunteers were searching for people after the horrific 6/11/2010 flood that killed so many campers.
It’s stunning out there. Probably a top 5 place I’ve ever been because of how wild it is. That flood was very unfortunate and so sad
Just found your account, awesome video! The one question I have is... how do you get back to your staring point? (where I assume you left your car) When you get to point B, how to you take the kayaks back up?
Great question! We will take two cars and leave one at the exit, driving the other with all the gear to the lunch. It can take time but it works
Thank you for you nice video sir. Me and my wife enjoyed watching it. Because of your video, we’re looking into getting into kayaking. May I know what backpack are you using in this video and if you could run down your gear if it’s not too much of a hassle? Appreciate it advance. God bless!
Edit: Apparently im not reading. My apologies.
So glad you enjoyed it! I gotta recommend the remote designs dry bags because I designed them myself haha. Linked above! But you’ll absolutely enjoy kayaking it’s the best way to get out and away from people for sure
No. You're on a sit on top claiming this river is super dangerous. People. Get out there. That's great, but making a river float seem dangerous is dumb. Glad ya had fun tho. Be honest with your story. This is like that scene in Robin Hood with John. Just stand up. It's a foot deep and not steep.
Chill my brother! The story is 100% accurate. Danger is on a spectrum and for those that haven’t paddled this river before it should be encountered with caution. Definitely manageable with the right level of caution.
how do you find somewhere safe to camp? given that 99% of land on texas is privately owned you are almost certainly sleeping on private property. that is a good way to get yourself killed in TX.
Study up on Texas navigation laws and you’ll be able to determine what is and is not the public line boundary. To be safe just stick to islands and you’ll be good! Landowners in Texas talk a big game about shooting people but they would go straight to prison for shooting someone sleeping. Self defense only applies if you’re getting attacked. So just don’t attack anyone and you’ll be good! If they call the police on you for trespassing, you’re still good because you’ll be camped on an island on public land!
Kayaks being used in this video are...
Kayaks! Not every car is a Porsche
And hard to be picky here. But as A guy who gets out Kayaking less often than he really wants, a higher mounted camera looking forward is quite valuable.
Yall are pretty crazy about your clear water small streams that are max ten feet deep in Oklahoma. Washington or Oregon is your friend. Not the clearest water by a long shot in the US. Lots of the wrong kind of algae blooms there.
Take what we can get! Oregon is cool but those Clearwater rivers are expected. Not down here, they’re gems!
Gotta have that espresso!! Lmao.......
I totally agree!
awesome content keep up the good work
Thank you so much and will do!
I can’t take anyone in a Sundolphin serious.
We don’t want to be taken seriously
Have you done any mods to the oldtown canoe?
Good question! I don’t mod any of my kayaks and try to keep them as simple as possible. I even take off the bungie chords haha
Well now I know what I’m doing this weekend.
Get after it!
Dude you are such a nerd.
Very cool! 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
Thank you Schaefer!
I don't think I am ready kayaking the that river but I sure would love to fish the hell out of her
The fact that you’re doing this with sit on tops and no helmets or life jackets shows that this is either mostly a float trip, or you are absolute morons.
Thank You for the youtube journey
All worth it to interact with you and others in the comments!
3:40 clearly you have never been up north like glacier. The rivers and creeks up north are so clear you can easily see the bottom. How ever the river you did in this video is very clear but still not as clear as up there. Even Yellowstone lake was very clear you could easily see down at least 6 feet.
I’ve been to Montana/Wyoming/Idaho/Utah/Colorado/ New Mexico/California many times and those rivers can be incredible. I think this one is unexpected in a state like Oklahoma so it hits harder. Glacier you kinda expect beautiful streams haha
@@GatewoodBrown yea usually southern waters are muddy from all sediment from the north. I know here in Missouri only time we can see the bottom of a stream is if its less than like 3 feet deep.
@@zemtek420 very true!
One side is the US and the other Mexico, but which is which in your video?
On the way up canyon Mexico is the left side. Way down is right side
There are amazing cabins to stay in up there. Ive been snowmobiling for the weekend.i need to spend a summer weekend up there now! The mountains look even more amazing capped in white. Thats July, in the mountains of Utah❤
Those cabins looked brilliant! I bet it’s amazing to snowmobile, I’ll have to check out some videos about it. A whole summer up there would be rad!
lovely video, good advertisement for eastern OK! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! Eastern OK is a hidden gem to our is staters for sure. We love it up there
The Ozarks don't extend into Oklahoma. The river itself doesn't leave Missouri, but the region itself includes a small part of NW Arkansas.
You’re way off on that one
@@GatewoodBrown I'm actually not. I've lived a stone's throw from & fished/swam in the Ozark river for 30+ years. Not sure where the hell you were, or thought you were- but it wasn't the Ozarks, pal. 🤷
@@mihousebot3045 nice, doesn’t change the fact that geology and geography doesn’t agree with you.
@@GatewoodBrown It actually does. You've clearly never been anywhere near the Ozarks and it shows. 🤦
You ever bringing this style back?
It’s retired for good! The roll top backpack will be our main backpack for the next several years but I’m considering designing up another backpack with a zipper or similar closure
That is one nice river I bet trout fishing is great
Tons of trout in there! Saw a bunch but didn't have my gear
Mannnnnnnnn! I know it sucks, but some of us like the extended scenic videos! More more more!
The extended videos are great! It's essentially something I export when halfway through editing. I'll be sure to do extended cuts for all the major videos we do!
Another stunning kayak adventure! We gotta get back to Utah in the summer sometime 😍
Utah and Wyoming were kind of my western playground last summer. Hoping to spend more time up there again! Lisa and I just booked flights to Seattle so we will definitely be picking y'alls brain about what to do.
Well, I finally have my kayak! I bought a vibe sea ghost 110. I can't wait to do some paddle camping, Thank you for the inspiration and the videos. It's still pretty chili here in Colorado, but soon!! Thanks again be safe be blessed.
Congrats on the new kayak! You’re about to have a great summer of paddling that’s for sure. So many wonderful places to explore in your state
I have an old one of these from Vietnam, it’s a little worse for wear but it’s still holding together nicely. It has a serial number on it but it’s so faded I can’t read it anymore
That’s very interesting!
❤❤ another awesome trip
Thank you so much for watching another one!
Old man couldn’t stay afloat to save his life 😂
Respect to everyone who still sends it!
Not hatin just for a kick out of it
Just ran into this video. Really great job and it looks like the two of you had a great time! My family and I and some very close neighbors used to camp on the Frio starting back in the early 70's. I was about 11 years old but I promised myself that someday I would own a piece of the fabulous Frio River. About 27 years ago I was fortunate enough to purchase 3 acres with riverfront. I (and family and friends) have never regretted it! I go there every chance I get. I recognized almost everywhere you two filmed (LOL). Sorry to get to this video so late - but keep up the great job!
Thank you! Wow I bet the Frio was pretty magical back then. Less development and more flow. We like that! Glad you’ve been able to spend so much time out on the Frio for all these years. A wonderful place!
I really want one of these .. obviously its well balanced for a sit in top..my pelican blows for rapids and dlood water here in Missouri
Yeah the old town sportsans are super stable. Not much tipping over in this guy!
Definitely rule of thumb here...don't get turned sideways .awesome death defying testosterone sheet bro..hell yeah on this..
Ripper baby! Definitely an exciting ride haha
